Dear Friends,
Finally I can say, “Greetings from Namibia”. The Lord graciously granted us a safe trip up at the end of April.
I was blessed to have a friend, Marianne drive up with me and spend ten days here before having to take her to Windhoek to board the bus back to Cape Town. While in Windhoek, I was able to sort out my documentation. The Lord had providentially provided citizenship in 1993 and it is still valid.
After setting up camp at Nakambale and a good night’s sleep we went to visit Christofine at Onamambili and promptly got stuck in the mud. Fortunately there was help near by and we managed to get the car out, not without a flat tyre though. Eventually we arrived at Christofine’s homestead and were greeted with a huge smile.
My time here has been quite eventful.
At the beginning of the May we played taxi and took the St. Peter’s ladies who are studying the Bible through the NETS correspondence program to the NETS graduation day at Ongwediva. As yet none of them have graduated but some have already done 18 studies. They graduate with a Diploma in Bible Studies after they have completed 28 studies.
There was great excitement when Bishop Cole Edwards arrived to visit and confirm the 103 confirmees. On the Friday we went to visit three of the five churches and Bishop Cole Edwards encouraged the church leaders of St Luke’s at Omungwelume and St. Paul’s at Ohangwena by promising to visit every six months. He has also promised to assist St. Luke’s in building their new church.
I was privileged to accompany David Greef, the NETS coordinator to Oluno prison in Ondangwa and meet both the men and women inmates studying with NETS. What an experience to listen to the men share about the Bible and see their strong leadership.
I have taken over the ladies’ weekly study group from David because it is not always possible for them to join the men’s group. There are 9 female students at the moment and six graduates.
Bible studies are up and running at four of the five congregations. I am doing “Just for Starters” with the ladies and “God’s plan to save you” with the youth.
The Lord has provided a very able interpreter through David Greef. Her name is Amalia, please pray that we would develop a good friendship and working relationship.
Ifgenia, the youth leader of St. Peter’s also interprets for me. Please pray for her too, as she is often sick. She truly loves the Lord and is very committed to the youth.
Namibia is an hour behind S.A. and I still have not got used to the time difference. At 6pm Namibian time it’s dark already and the evenings seem endless. Even the cocks are confused; they start crowing at 11pm.
Another thing I have to get used to, is the way people drive up here. S.A. taxis are not a patch on these. They overtake at the most impossible times and then expect you to get out of the way.
Overall the transition has been easy, I just miss church services where I can actually understand what has been said and that are not ritualistic. I have now attended services in 4 of the 5 congregations; of the two-hour service only 15 min max. is spent preaching. The rest is all just rituals. My prayer is that as the Holy Spirit brings people to salvation and into a living relationship with God they would come to truly understand and appreciate the prayers, confession and creed they so lightly chant.
It is such a privilege to work with women who are so hungry for the Word of God.
When I asked the St. Peter’s ladies what time we have to end Bible study they said 6pm, we had started at 2pm. We finished at 5pm.
The CfN outreach has come and gone. It was great to catch up with old friends and to meet new faces. As always they were very busy, ministering to the children, youth, men, women and at the school for the deaf and the blind. The ladies’ team met with the Nam ladies from four of the congregations. On the two Fridays they held sewing classes with the help of Martina, a young lady from Germany. Megan Ziervogel did a great job as cook and I thoroughly enjoyed the meals.
The Lord provided a 1 bedroom flat for me the very same day that the team arrived. Apparently, they had been praying for accommodation and were hoping that they would be able to help me move in.
The men’s team took pity on me and renovated the flat. I sincerely appreciate all their hard work and the new fridge and microwave. I am enjoying the comfort of my new flat even without hot water and sometimes with no water at all.
There are tons of people around and even more children so it is a great place to have a children’s club. My one neighbour has already said she wants to join one of the Bible studies. God is good. My neighbour on the other side plays his music loud enough for everyone to hear anytime of the night and early morning. Such is life.
Thank you to everyone, for all your prayers and financial and physical support that has made it possible for me to work here. I sincerely appreciate all you have done and still are doing for me. I praise the Lord for his faithfulness and provision in sending me here and raising my support level to 76%.
Please continue to pray:
For all the ministers and church leaders;
- That the Lord will bring them to salvation,
- That they would lead by example and would be committed to their congregations.
- For changed hearts and lives.
- For spiritual strength and perseverance for those who are saved.
- For the Christian ladies, whose husbands are not saved.
For myself:
- Praise the Lord for a good relationship with Rev. Denys Nande and pray that it will continue.
- For wisdom, discernment and humility in my relationship with church ministers and leadership.
- For wisdom and God’s help in preparing study material.
- For spiritual and physical strength and perseverance in learning the language.
